The Origin Of The Kaftan

The Origin Of The Kaftan

At Yomisma, we love a good Kaftan.

Comfortable, airy and breezy.   Wearing one of these beauties always gives you an instant dose of confidence.  There is just something about this commanding garment that makes you feel good wearing it.

Perhaps because it has a rich history that spans centuries and continents.

The kaftan's roots can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia, Persia (modern-day Iran), from as early as the 2nd millennium BCE and the Ottoman Empire. The garment was often worn by men and was typically made from silk, cotton, or wool.  The Ottoman sultans popularized the kaftan, wearing richly decorated versions as a sign of their power and prestige. These kaftans were often gifts to important figures and were part of the official court attire.

The kaftan evolved over time, influenced by the interactions between different cultures and the changing tastes of the ruling classes.

In regions like Morocco and Algeria, the kaftan became a traditional garment for both men and women. The design often included geometric patterns and bright colors, reflecting local artistic styles.

In places like Nigeria, the kaftan evolved into a garment known as the boubou, worn by both men and women, often made from brightly colored fabrics and elaborate embroidery.

At the beginning of the 20thcentury, Queen Victoria's granddaughter married Czar Nicolas II becoming Czarina Alexandra and was photographed in a traditional kaftan.  The opulence of the garment sparked a taste for the exotic dress which became all the rage in Victorian England.

This gorgeous silhouette eventually spread Across regions.

In the mid-1950's Balenciaga's oversized trapeze and sack dresses gained popularity.

In 1960s and 1970s the kaftan experienced a resurgence in popularity, particularly in the United States and Europe. It became associated with the bohemian and hippie movements, symbolizing freedom and individuality.

Today, the kaftan is a versatile garment worn by people all over the world. It is often used as a beach cover-up, evening wear, or casual attire, and designers continue to experiment with fabrics, patterns, and styles.

The kaftan's enduring appeal lies in its versatility, comfort, and rich cultural heritage, making it a timeless piece in the world of fashion.

A kaftan is characterized by several distinct attributes that set it apart from other garments. A kaftan is typically loose and flowing, providing comfort and ease of movement.  It usually extends to the mid-calf or to the floor, although shorter versions that hit at the knees are also common.

The neckline of a kaftan can vary widely, including V-neck, round neck, boat neck, and more. Some kaftans have deep plunging necklines, while others are more modest.  Necklines are often adorned with embroidery, beadwork, or other decorative elements.

Kaftans are often made from rich fabrics like silk, satin, brocade, or cotton. Lightweight and breathable fabrics are also common, especially in warm climates.

These easy garments have unisex Appeal.  While kaftans are often associated with women's fashion, they are also worn by men in many cultures.

Additionally, they have a full length zipper giving them ultimate versatility.  They can be worn as a traditional kaftan and unzipped, they make an amazing bolero or swimsuit coverup.  They also work great as a wrap dress and look incredible belted like a dress.
